ituated between the St. Lawrence river and downtown skyscrapers, Old Montreal is made for exploring on foot. Meander through the historic old town's winding streets, many of which are cobblestone. As you walk, you'll discover vestiges of every era of the city's history since its founding in 1642.
Go up the street a few steps: you're at Place d'Armes, where architecture from the 17th, 19th and 20th centuries stands side by side. Go into Notre Dame Basilica, a neo-Gothic masterpiece built between 1824 and 1829, and admire its starry ceiling; walk past St. Sulpice Seminary, the city's oldest building… Head down towards the river and along the Rue de la Commune. The Old Port is bustling with activity. The venerable buildings lining the street overlook the water and the boats coming in to dock. Continue on to Place Jacques-Cartier, created in the 19th century and the heart of Montreal's summer activity. Go further to the imposing Bonsecours Market or walk up through Place Jacques-Cartier to Rue Notre Dame and peek into the Château Ramezay on your right. Head back to the hotel along Rue St. Paul - spend some time checking out its boutiques, cafés and antique shops. Ask for a map from the hotel's front desk. |
